The Festival that has established itself as the most important contemporary dance event of Cyprus, returns to the Rialto Theatre after a 2-year suspension due to Covid. Contemporary dance aficionados will have a unique opportunity to enjoy a series of exceptional performances reflecting contemporary dance trends, schools and movements, thus building bridges between Cyprus and the international choreographic production.
The performances highlight current issues whilst showcasing the work of renowned choreographers, covering an extensive thematic that focuses on social, political or existential issues. This year’s edition especially highlights diversity as reflected in the identity of the performers and their country of origin. This thematic is especially visible in the international project Portraits in Otherness inspired by Akram Khan and Farooq Chaudhry, that promotes artists who carry multiple identities and whose works “dance” on the borders of the worlds.
The festival’s opening performance also balances in-between the borders of the world: in Beytna, choreographers from five different countries meet on stage over a banquet of food, also inviting the spectators to this feast!
Moreover, in this 2022 edition, the Festival is hosting Workshops by renowned choreographers Joy Alpuerto and Dickson Mbi, as part of the Portraits in Otherness project. These will take place on the 25th of June at the Rialto Theatre and are addressed to dance professionals and students.

5/6 Animale* FRANCESCA FOSCARINI/ COSIMO LOPALCO sun 20:30 (40’)
This solo master piece from Italy premiered at La Biennale Venezia 2018, and it is inspired by the work of painter Antonio Ligabue. Animale brings to the stage, in the words of John Berger, a frightfully indifferent nature, made of energy and combat, that exists without promising anything. Choreography: Francesca Foscarini

Elena Antoniou unapologetically demonstrates herself in order to highlight the personal experience as a collective landscape. She overexposes the female body with pleasure and extends the limit of spectacle by skillfully and intentionally inviting the gaze of the spectators. Dance is a mating ritual. Even today, dance continues to play a central role in how many of us find a mate. This dance production from Switzerland for four Romeos explores the idea of dance as a thrillingly up close and personal form of courtship. Choreography: Joshua Monten

Between a talk show and a Sunday confession, Q&A from Israel shares intimate moments from the performers’ lives and creates more like a sharing than a traditional performance. Choreography: Rachel Erdos.
12/6 Layaz Ι EDITTA BRAUN COMPANY sun 20:30 (50’)
How can a young woman find her own self under the many veiling and protective layers that surround her? A play from Austria about identity, freedom, the "other" that is inherent in us - and about female complicité across generational and cultural boundaries. Choreography: Editta Braun.
15/6 45 Ι POLISH DANCE THEATRE wed 20:30 (45’)
45 shows the story of young dancers talking about - in a symbolic dimension - the subject of a collective, merged with teamwork, as well as a common, conscious decision to choose art as a way of life. Choreography: Jacek Przybyłowicz.
22/6 Free At Last Ι DANAE & DIONYSIOS wed 20:30 (50')
Mystical imagery; dark atmosphere; Greek tradition deconstructed and linked with the present. An original choreography inspired by the legendary Dance of Zalongo. Danae & Dionysios carry the emotionally charged ‘last dance’ onto the stage, conveying the movement towards the brink of the abyss. Choreography: Danae & Dionysios.

Portraits in Otherness (Akram Khan, Farooq Chaudhry) is a project that promotes artists who carry multiple identities and whose works dance on the borders of the worlds we know and those we imagine. The following works are presented: BABAE choreographed by Joy Alpuerto Ritter (30’) and DUENDE choreographed by Dickson Mbi (25’).
