The Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, the Cyprus Music Information Centre and the Rialto Theatre organise for the 7th consecutive year the Cyprus Jazz & World Music Showcase.
The mission of the Showcase is to provide a platform of artistic expression to musicians and bands who are active in the broader field of improvisational music, by presenting in a two-day event, a comprehensive and dynamic picture of the island’s contemporary music scene.
Following an open call for submissions, the Theatre has received this year an increasing number of applications, eight of which have been selected by the Selection Committee to take part in the line-up of the CJWMS, which will take place at the Rialto Theatre, with two more bands becoming selected to participate in this year’s updated Jam Sessions. The latter will take place at Art Studio 55, adjacent to the Rialto Theatre, after the main line-up concerts.
It is worth mentioning that this year’s performances will be streamed in real time. Taking into account the unstable situation of the pandemic, the Organisers wish to ensure that the Showcase will take place after all, as well as to give the opportunity to more spectators to watch the concerts from the safety of their home via live streaming, and to witness the progress and evolution of the Cypriot music scene.
The above potential of the CJWMS being broadcast live, will also enable the Showcase to reach prominent personalities of the international music industry, who have been invited to attend the performances virtually. This may result in Cypriot musicians becoming selected to participate in international music festivals, thus building a platform for exchange of experience and practice amongst artists on an international level.
As in previous years, discussions and masterclasses with music industry experts will also take place - this year virtually - and will focus on keeping Cypriot musicians up to date with the structures and operational mechanisms of the international music industry.
