Following its successful run in Athens and the warm response from audiences and critics, “Oedipus Tyrannus”, directed by Sofia Antoniou, comes to the Rialto Theatre for two exclusive performances on 12 and 13 May 2026 at 20:30.
This is a contemporary adaptation of Sophocles’ tragedy in the form of a monologue, transforming the ancient myth into an intimate journey of identity and truth-seeking. At its core is a man moving through a fluid, unstable world, confronting trauma and origins while attempting to understand who he truly is.
Central to the production is Harry Charalambous - Kazepis, whose performance was awarded the Best Actor in a Greek Play Award at the “Karlos Koun” Awards 2024/25, held at the Olympia Theatre – Maria Callas Municipal Music Theatre, organised by the City of Athens and the Association of Greek Theatre and Music Critics.
Born in Limassol, the actor returns to his hometown through this production in a deeply poetic resonance with the myth itself. As Oedipus searches for his roots and identity, the performance mirrors that journey back to its own point of origin. Charalambous - Kazepis stands out as one of the most complete figures of his generation, combining theatrical training, musical education, and technical studies. He is a graduate with honours of the New Greek Theatre Drama School of George Armenis, holds a singing diploma from the Hellenic Conservatory, and studied at the National Technical University of Athens. His career includes collaborations with leading institutions such as the National Theatre of Greece, the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, the Onassis Stegi, and the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC), as well as work as an acting teacher and director. In cinema, he has appeared in films including “El Greco” by Yannis Smaragdis.
In “Oedipus Tyrannus”, he undertakes a demanding artistic challenge, embodying all characters of the tragedy and constructing a unified, multi-layered stage world. His performance functions simultaneously as narration and confession, drawing the audience into an experience of rare intimacy and presence.
The music by Ecati and the scenographic world by Marilena Kalaitzantonaki create an immersive environment where speech, body, and sound coexist organically, intensifying the dramatic experience.
A production of deep introspection, the performance brings Oedipus into the present as a profoundly human story about truth, responsibility, and the enduring need to see ourselves clearly.
