Musical Clock of Yesterday and Today

The musical clock of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra ticks first for the Serenade for Strings of the Cypriot contemporary composer, Nicos Troullos.

 

It is then transferred to the ’50s, with the viola concerto by Martinů and ends two centuries earlier, with Haydn’s Symphony «The Clock».

Royall Ballet 

Some of Frederick Ashton’s most brilliant choreography, depicting the youthful passion of Lise and her lover, Colas, expressed in folk dances, dancing chickens, grouchy guardians and halfwit suitors.

 

The ballet was a resounding success on its premiere in 1960 and has remained ever since a firm favourite in the repertory of the Royal Opera House, from which it is broadcasted.

The Oh Fuck Moment 

The Rialto Theatre presents a series of performances of The Oh Fuck Moment, by Chris Thorpe and Hannah Jane Walker, that won a Fringe-First at Ediburgh Fringe Festival (2011).

 

The play is a production of Bios (Athens) and «[...] a «slice» of a different and authentic theatre, without costumes and sets. It leaves an «oh good moment» aftertaste and 70 minutes of uplift, companionship and sharing, as well as a genuine and young – very young – theatre.

The Turkish Cypriot Municipal Theatre presented Faize Özdemirciler’s poetry, directed and performed by Yaşar Ersoy.

 

The play refers to the tragic events of the past and the present, focusing on the future.

 

Although she uses a strong language against those who committed the historic crime of the island, her work looks at the future with hope and optimism.

This young voice, one of Portugal’s most extraordinary fado singers, gives a new impetus to the traditional music of the country.

Ross Daly: RIALTO Residency  

(Platres Cultural Centre) 

Another edition of the Rialto Residency will mark this year’s World Music Festival, under the artistic direction of internationally acclaimed musician, Ross Daly.

 

The virtuoso musician, playing a variety of instruments, has established a number of music synergies with many renowned musicians from across the globe, and works on the music discipline of Eastern traditions, exploring new music forms and creative improvisation.

 

Among other instruments, he plays the Cretan lyra, Afghan rabab, lute, Constantinople lyra, sarangi, oud, saz, tambur. 

 

Through his collaboration and study with artists living in Cyprus, as well as with Kelly Thoma, a revived combination of music traditions will be developed and performed at Platres Cultural Centre.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus presents the Central Nationalities Song and Dance Ensemble of China which is based in Beijing and is the only national-level performance group representing China's ethnic minorities.

 

It was founded in September 1952 by Premier Zhou Enlai. With over 300 members representing 36 ethnic groups, it has performed in over 70 countries and gives over 100 performances each year.

Gilad Ephrat String Ensemble: Rainbow of Sounds and Strings 

WORLD MUSIC SERIES 

 

The band of acclaimed Israeli double bassist and composer, Gilad Ephrat, presents a rainbow of melodies, an amalgam of different music genres, from jazz to ethnic and from classical to Israeli music.

 

His compositions have their roots in the composer’s family, merging Israeli music with sounds from Eastern Europe, combining three string instruments: violin, cello and mandolin.

Cyprus University of Technology and Prima Vista present a music tribute to the work of Marios Tokas, through narrative, music and photographic references to his life and discography.

Peter and the wolf /The magic remote control  

A family concert by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra 

 

The instruments of the symphony orchestra will tell us the classic musical tale Peter and the Wolf, by Sergei Prokofiev.

 

Peter enjoys the beauty of nature in the company of a duck, a cat and a bird, until a wolf shows up.  

After the musical tale, children will come across a pleasant surprise!

A contemporary adaptation of the classic Cretan renaissance tragedy Erofili by Georgios Chortatsis, an emblematic play in the history of Greek literature.

 

This love story, written in verse, carries a strong social mark, raising questions on the position of women in society.

Choreographer Machi Dimitriadou Lindahl, four performers and two musicians tell the story of Sophocles’ heroine, Antigone, narrated through the language of body and music.

 

With these tools, they diffuse the emotional power of the play and transfer its anti-authoritarian messages.

 

Antigone, through Sophocles’ words “I was born to join in love, not hate”, chooses the path that is defined by moral law, denouncing at the same time the arrogance of power and authority.

5th International Short Film Festival of Cyprus 

 

More than 100 fiction, documentary, experimental and animation short films from across the globe, will be screened at the 5th International Short Film Festival of Cyprus.

 

Through this large selection of films directed by Cypriot and international filmmakers, the Festival will showcase their work and offer to the audience the opportunity to enjoy the best of international short film cinema.

 

The Festival’s international and national competition sections will also be accompanied by: 

 

  • A tribute to 3D cinema, a one-hour unforgettable 3D experience with stereoscopic short films and  

  • Parallel programmes that will take us on a journey to Africa’s reality, to the rhythms of dance films and music videos, up to the fascinating world of comics and animations. 

 

The Festival is co-organised by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Rialto Theatre. The artistic committee consists of Cypriot filmmakers Alexia Roider and Ioakim Mylonas.

The season continues with another opera by Verdi, inspired by Shakespeare’s play and matching it in tragic intensity.

 

Bartlett Sher presents the Moor’s dramatic downfall with an outstanding cast: tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko plays the doomed Otello; new soprano star Sonya Yoncheva sings Desdemona, Otello’s innocent wife and victim; and baritone Željko Lučić plays the evil Iago, who masterminds Otello’s demise.

 

Dynamic maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts.

Aliye Ummanel: Missing 

 

A young man, his mother and grandfather. A missing father. The young man, who has lost the hope and meaning of life, has to perform Hamlet in a “strange” place. 

 

The Turkish Cypriot Municipal Theatre presents a play dealing with a major trauma which comes from the past and repeats itself.

 

It focuses on what the post war generation is missing and it is a sincere effort for confrontation with the past, present and future.

Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra – Deborah Myers  

 

Acclaimed Greek tenor, Mario Frangoulis, in a collaboration with the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro Yiorgos Kountouris and accompanied by soprano Deborah Myers.

 

The programme includes songs from the classical repertoire, musical songs, as well as compositions from the Greek repertoire, written by renowned Greek musicians: Theodorakis, Xarchakos, Hadjidakis etc.
