For the 9th consecutive year, the institution, which was embraced by both, the public and the artists, returns to the RIALTO Theatre in Limassol on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 December the showcase programme includes parallel events at 10:00 p.m. at the Voice (former Kyklos, next to the Rialto theater).

Wanderlust means having an intense desire to travel, longing to be an explorer, to be restless, curious and open-minded. With this exact energy and intention, Andria created this new performance project titled Wanderlust, which creates soundscapes drawn by different music cultures. Jazz and improvisation bring the various styles together, creating a rich tapestry of sounds, and acting as a common idiom between the musicians.
Colours and melodies from the Middle Eastern and the Mediterranean regions along with the vibrant rhythms of Africa and Latin America blend organically with the modern harmony and structure. Along with their own creative arrangements of songs from across the world, the band will also perform a selection of original songs by Andria, as well as music composed by Argentinian composer Roman Gomez from their latest collaboration album Encuentro. Wanderlust is a show that combines music with elements from other creative disciplines such as dance and storytelling. It is a creative project that investigates the ingredients that make each culture unique while embracing, at the same time, what unites us all.
Wanderlust finds its first stop in Cyprus with a group of musicians from a diverse musical background: jazz, rebetiko, Eastern Mediterranean and Latin music. Andria Antoniou & friends have a common artistic expression based on improvisation, open interaction and experimentation, with the band seeking to establish an intercultural dialogue and promote a sense of unity in cultural diversity. This group of explorers takes the audience on a musical journey across the Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East, all the way to Africa and Latin America. Inspired by each destination and the residents’ everyday stories, the band presents original material and their own rearrangements of songs from each country.

Every disaster has a peak and a suppression point. We live in a strange world, full of destruction and beauty. This music would be called ‘progressive jazz’ due to the modern harmonies and volatile rhythms that the band creates. Imagine a rainstorm, getting to a point full of tension and finishing with a beautiful rainbow. The whole pandemic inspired me to change my point of view and create my own rainbow. Dimitris Terpizis Quartet will present tracks from the band leader’s freshly recorded debut progressive/jazz album, which was recorded last summer. The album features David Binney (awarded as best alto sax player, Antonio Sanchez, Gil Evans, Maria Schneider) and Panagiotis Andreou (Now vs Now, Alfredo Rodriguez etc) as guest artists.
Dimitris Terpizis Quartet is a progressive jazz quartet inspired by the world and its functions, aiming to project feelings through music that will drive
the audience into a powerful world, full of explosions, destructive climax,
consolation, and hope. The quartet fuses a modern way of playing with tradition, characterized by strong rhythms with delicate sounds and combining elements from the West and the Middle East.

Also, it should be noted that the Jazz Improvisation workshop will be held on Saturday 10/12 at 10:00 am at Dance House Lemesos by Dimitris Vassilakis, President of Jazz Democracy NPO, Artistic director & founder of RIJF, Adjunct lecturer and researcher at the Laboratory of Music Acoustics and Technology Department of Music Studies - National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
This workshop will touch upon the concepts of the democratic nature of jazz through improvisation as it was presented by Dimitris Vassilakis at the United Nations. The participants will be introduced to the latest developments regarding jazz and technology, with a special focus on artificial intelligence. D. Vassilakis will also present his research work at Athens University, Demokritos and Georgia Tech.
On a more practical level, participants will have the opportunity to talk about jazz improvisational styles and how the jazz language has evolved in the course of time. The individual needs of the participants regarding instruments will be considered, with references to special saxophone techniques such as circular breathing and harmonics.
