13th European Dance Festival

Upcoming June in Lemesos and Nicosia

The European festival of contemporary dance is now one of the longest and most successful events in the cultural life of our country. Starting 13 years ago by an organization of the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture which relied on the cooperation with the embassies of European countries, the festival has managed to become an event of high prestige for which there is increasing interest in participating. This festival has developed very rapidly from a substandard form of organization and production in Nicosia to being a high level and professional organization based in Limassol, hosted and co-hosted at the RIALTO theatre.

The transfer of the organization in Limassol at Rialto Theatre, was fruitful and due to appropriate technical infrastructure managed to attract major teams from the global dance scene thereby reaching to put Cyprus on the international map of dance events.

The last few years the festival diversified again in the organizational structure by introducing a more modern selection of performances. While in the past, teams were chosen by the vast majority of embassies and the corresponding services of the countries represented. The last 2-3 years a system of three proposals from each country was introduced which is evaluated from a designated committee from the Cultural Services and proposes which team to call.

Moreover, the choice has resulted to the reduction of the duration of the festival, as it was not obliged to accept any more redundant representations so that it can be held in June. Maintaining a free transfer from Nicosia to Limassol, institutionalized the transfer of some of the performances in Nicosia at Pallas Theatre, giving the opportunity to the public of Nicosia to attend both current trends and patterns of dance and to raise in this way the Cypriot teams that stood out from the Platform of Contemporary Dance.

In this year's 13th organization, 10 teams from Europe and three teams from Cyprus combine a program with different motifs, themes, techniques and trends which present an outstanding interest due to the general reflection of the contemporary dance world, developing a variety of art forms which listen more and more to social issues and occasions.

Bla, bla, bla Black out

Bla ,bla, bla ,black out ...A land divided in two.
A violent surgery without anaesthetic. The wound is still open...

Bla,bla, bla, black out. The historic memories and the expectations
of yesterday cannot be memories and expectations of today.
But they still exist, they are still alive. They intrude as a catalyst
in the battle of vital space, they refuse time to get back to point
zero even for a slight moment. The imposition of the logic of the ekremmes in historical spacetime, denies any chance/ possiblity of the continuation of history, does not allow the comfort of the final act/ solution/ reconciliation.

Bla, bla, bla, black out...The endless, unsufferable countdown, the endless and doomed pregnancy. Memories and expectations which refuse present
time and kill each other. Black out! The final act/ solution is expected in vain.
A land divided in two, between memories of the past and expectations
of the future.. All we get are echoes across the divide.

Idea / Concept / Choreography: Elena Christodoulidou
Dancers: Yoav Grinberg, Loizos Constantinou, Penelopi Georgiadou

Giraffe

‘...Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds. Have no fear in redefining your self concept and acknowledging the false identity projected on you by others, Coz none of the above can stop the time. How long shall they kill our personal universe, while we stand aside and look?
Some say it's just a part of it do I have to fulfill that look? Won't you help me sing. These songs of freedom. They are all I ever had. Redemption songs'

Paul Kee

‘She justifies nothing. She keeps moving on....
She changes her story. The story she keeps telling every night, never remains the same.... She changes her story every day.

From the rehearsals of Savanna Bay

A duet by two women supported by recorded and live music. Fotini Perdikaki has choreographed a hyper - feminine work which is emotional atmospheric, and intellectual. A great refreshment in the current contemporary dance scene, the work is created with attention to the visual design of the piece, costumes musicality, dance technique and execution. The beautiful dancers seamlessly transition between sustained virtuosic movement and rhythmical gestures, showing simultaneously sullen and strong aspects of a woman.
